She was an award winning record setting competitive swimmer in the 1930's but had to change her career path when World War Two caused the cancelation of the 1940 Summer Olympics. Practically living in her swimsuit made her a natural for a pinup model and it was a unique time for aquatics the entertainment industry and Hollywood were experimenting with using the water and swimmers as entertainment; so a pretty girl so at home in the water as Ester Williams had no problem finding a new career path as unique as herself and the rest is history…

Date/Place Birth: August 8, 1921 / Inglewood, California, U.S. Living: Living in Beverly Hills California with fourth husband Edward Bell. Spouse(s) & Children: Leonard Kovner (m. 1940–1944 divorced); Ben Gage (m.1945–1959 divorced) 3 children; Fernando Lamas (m. 1969–1982 his death); Edward Bell (1994–present) Short Biography: Esther Williams' was teenage swimming champion discovered by MGM talent scout while working in a Los Angeles department store. Here first film was in a 1942 a Andy Hardy picture called “Andy Hardy's Double Life” with Mickey Rooney. MGM her in a new movie genre known as "Aqua Musicals" which were actually quite dangerous to make and eventually led to her injury and almost resulted in her death. During the war years she visited the hospitals and entertained injured soldiers to do her part for the war effort. Esther Williams retired from film making in the sixties and found other mostly swimming and water related ways to make her living. |
