When is Veterans Day? Veterans Day in 2012 falls on Sunday the 11th of November 2012. Therefore in the U.S.A. the following Monday November 12, 2012 will be a leave day. In the United States of America Veterans Day is generally observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated. Historically it has been through some changes and celebration or days off may come on a different date when the 11th falls on a weekend "Veterans Day" is now always officially November 11th. However, when Veterans Day falls on a weekday, many communities choose to hold Veterans Day parades or other celebrations on the weekend before or after November 11 so that more people can participate; and some add a Friday before or Monday after to create 3 day weekends.
The beginning of Veterans Day started with the first unofficial Veterans Day began with the end of World War 1 with the "armistice", or cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars”, and the origional holiday was ment to celebrate the end of the "Great War" it's dead and survivors. Once known as Armistace Day the holiday is celebrated as "Remembrance Day" on or near November 11 in many countries other than the United States.

Why do people wear red poppies on Memorial Day?

The wearing of poppies in honor of America's war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day, not Veterans Day. The practice of wearing of poppies takes its origin from the poem In Flanders Fields, a war veterans poem written in 1915 by John McCrae:
